5 Health Tips For Seniors

As you get older your body becomes more immune to illnesses. As scary as it is, there are ways to prevent it. There is a saying that if you eat healthier from a younger age, it will only help you as you get older. While that may be true, it’s never too late to start taking care of your health. Not sure where to start? Here are 5 health tips to follow:

  1. Sleep
Be sure to get up to 8 hours of sleep or more, each night. If you’re feeling tired throughout the day, take a nap. Sleeping will allow your mind to relax and your body to rest and recover.
  2. Exercise
You may not be as fit or active as you were 15-20 years ago, however, that should not stop you from trying to maintain an active lifestyle. You don’t need to play sports or go to the gym for exercise. Simply going on a daily walk for 15-20 minutes is great. If you think that may be too much at once, break your walks into two, by going for a walk in the morning and one in the evening. Find a schedule and routine that works for you. Remember to consult with a doctor for more information on ways you can stay active.
  3. Socialize
Socializing is very important, just as important as it was 10 years ago. Surround yourself with those that make you happy, such as your family, and friends. Join a local seniors club and take part in weekly activities.
  4. Eat A Balanced Diet
Maintaining a healthy diet is the key to being healthy. Ensure you are eating your recommended servings of fruits, vegetables, dairy and proteins. If you are feeling uninspired about your food, try to change up the types of food you eat. Try new fruits or vegetables, or recipes!
  5. Stay On Top Of Your Medications
Chances are you are prescribed a number of medications to take for various reasons. It’s very important that you stay on top of taking your medications when you are supposed to take them. Purchase a weekly medication holder and organize your medication for the week. This makes remembering to take them much easier!

There are many health tips we can offer seniors to stay healthy. The most important part is to ensure they are motivated and inspired to do so. Helping your loved ones as they get older will not only provide them with the support they need but give you the reassurance that they are living a healthy lifestyle.
