The older you get, the more important it is to watch what you eat and to maintain a healthy diet. Of course, you want to indulge once in a while, but it’s important to maintain your diet on a daily basis.   1. Uncooked eggs, meat & poultry

  2. High-Sodium Foods
    Avoid eating high-sodium foods such as cheese, processed foods, frozen dinners, and salted snacks. High-sodium can impact those with high blood pressure and can impact those with heart diseases.  
  3. Sugary Drinks
    Drinking sugary drinks will impact those with diabetes. It’s best to avoid drinking soda all together. 
  4. Avoid Processed Foods
    Eating processed foods can increase your sodium intake. Processed foods are also usually filled with unhealthy fats. This can impact your health negatively, especially if you have high cholesterol. If you do enjoy eating processed foods, Health Canada suggests to eat them in small quantities.  
  5. Avoid Eating Oily/Greasy Foods
    Oily and greasy foods are filled with unhealthy fats and sodium. It can impact your digestive system and does not provide the nutrition you need.

    Eat lean proteins such as eggs, beans, tofu, plain greek yogurt, and lentils. Eating lean protein can help you lose weight, avoid overeating, and maintain body muscle and tissue.

    You may feel like a child again with this tip, but it’s very true! It’s very important to continue eating your daily servings of fruits and vegetables. Health Canada advises that you eat the fruits and vegetables that you enjoy! Be sure to include your dark greens (like kale and broccoli), carrots, and sweet potatoes.  
  3. Whole Grains
    According to Health Canada, whole grains can give you fibre, vitamins and minerals. Be sure to incorporate whole grains into your diet.  
  4. Low-Fat Dairy
    Low-fat dairy items such as skim milk, low-fat yogurt, and cottage cheese will provide you with calcium and protein, which will support your muscles and help them stay strong.  
  5. Eat Fiber
    Eating fibre is very important as a senior. Digesting your foods can become difficult. However, eating fibre-filled foods will help with your digestion.
